Testing a Machine Learning–Based Adaptive Motivational System for Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Smokers (Adapt2Quit): Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial

Mediation occurs when an independent variable (X) leads to a given outcome (Y) through an intervening process (M). In our case, the independent variable is the Adapt2 Quit recommender (X), and the outcome will be 6 months of smoking cessation (Y). Perceived competence and adoption of cessation-facilitating behaviors (use of quitlines, use of NRT, and adoption of behavioral strategies) are all potential mediators (M).
