In 1982, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins highlighted the arbitrary nature of many phenotypic delineations and introduced the concept of the “extended phenotype” [58]. This concept suggests that phenotypes should include all effects a gene has on its environment, not just biological processes like protein biosynthesis or tissue growth.
