Social Media and Youth Mental Health: Scoping Review of Platform and Policy Recommendations

A number of reports (2/14, 14%) recommended changes to Section 230(c)(1-2) of the 1996 Communications Decency Act in the United States [78,80], which currently offers social media companies immunity from responsibility for user-generated content on their platforms. With the amendment of this law, regulators would be able to hold owners of platforms such as Tik Tok and Instagram (eg, Meta and Byte Dance) accountable for harmful posts (eg, related to self-harm or hate speech) posted and shared by users.
