Expanding the Evidence on the Safety and Efficiency of 2-Way Text Messaging–Based Telehealth for Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision Follow-up Compared With In-Person Reviews: Randomized Controlled Trial in Rural and Urban South Africa

In both the urban and rural settings, the patients who missed the day 2 postsurgery visit were traced via phone call; if the patients missed both day 2 and day 7 visits and were not reachable by phone, up to 3 home visits were attempted to review the clients, when feasible. On day 0 (day of VMMC), a 2w T study team member registered all the intervention participants in the app.

In both rural and urban settings, HCWs reported that “...[2w T] reduces their work in terms of seeing the clients every day when [clients] comes to follow up check-up” (P1). In the rural context, the benefit may be greater, as it is common “to drive 100 plus KM just to see one patient” (P2).
