Experiences of Using a Digital Text Messaging Intervention to Support Oral Medication Adherence for People Living With Type 2 Diabetes: Qualitative Process Evaluation

SMS text messages are often perceived by users as a familiar and user-friendly technology requiring limited digital literacy and operating on any kind of mobile telephone. From a health perspective, SMS text messages have a low per-person cost and are routinely used in primary care services in the United Kingdom.

Family Members’ Experiences of a Person-Centered Information and Communication Technology–Supported Intervention for Stroke Rehabilitation (F@ce 2.0): Qualitative Analysis

Reminders to perform the activities are sent through SMS text messaging each morning. Later in the day, participants receive a new SMS text message asking them to estimate how well the activities were carried out during the day. F@ce 2.0 has been evaluated in a full-scale, nonrandomized, controlled trial (trial registration NCT043511789; manuscript under review). In addition to the ongoing effectiveness study, there is a need to explore how the intervention was experienced by family members [26].

Patient-Centered mHealth Intervention to Improve Self-Care in Patients With Chronic Heart Failure: Phase 1 Randomized Controlled Trial

Patient-Centered mHealth Intervention to Improve Self-Care in Patients With Chronic Heart Failure: Phase 1 Randomized Controlled Trial

To address this important knowledge gap, our team developed and tested a patient-centered HF self-care intervention (i Cardia4 HF) that integrates 3 commercial m Health apps and devices (My Apps) with a program of individually tailored SMS text messages (Text4 HF) to improve self-care in patients with HF. Tailoring of the text messages was guided by participants’ health beliefs, knowledge, and confidence in performing HF self-care.

Don’t Forget the Humble Text Message: 25 Years of Text Messaging in Health

In December 1992, the first SMS text message was sent. It contained the words “Merry Christmas” and was sent by a 22-year-old software programmer from the United Kingdom [1]. It took several more years for text messaging to become a standard means of communication from mobile phone to mobile phone. Now, as the most widely used feature on mobile phones, more than 5 billion people send and receive text messages globally [1].

The research team contacted the patients by phone for troubleshooting and to remind them to keep the app open in the background if patients’ phones were not transmitting data for more than 3 days (after the automated SMS reminders). In addition, patients in all groups could reply “STOP” or “PARAR” if they wished to stop receiving messages.
