Although couples have been considered an important population for HIV prevention, no interventions focusing on couples have been tested or implemented in Peru. In this context, same-sex couples (eg, sexual and gender minorities) remain unacknowledged by Peruvian law and exist within a context of limited social and societal support [7].

In Peru, one of the countries most affected by this disease worldwide [5], the government implemented some institutional initiatives to promote remote monitoring of these patients [6]. However, despite the high demand for services, the implementation of these interventions was limited by the lack of availability of health workers, for reasons including their loss during the pandemic [7].

Assessment of a Pilot Program for Remote Support on Mental Health for Young Physicians in Rural Settings in Peru: Mixed Methods Study

In Peru, recently graduated physicians participate in the Servicio Rural Urbano Marginal en Salud (Rural-Urban Marginal Health Service [SERUMS], in Spanish), which involves working in rural areas of Peru for 1 year [1]. This kind of initiative undertaken in several countries in Latin America has been shown to be effective in attracting the participation of health professionals in these areas, enhancing the distribution of and access to health services in underserved populations [2].

Furthermore, the pupil-to-teacher ratio in tertiary education in Peru is 19:1, according to the World Bank, which is higher than the recommended 16:1. Although there are no studies on the training of clinical educators or medical teachers, we believe that the situation in Peru may be similar to that described in a study conducted on Israeli physicians, in which 65% reported that they did not receive any training in medical education [13].

Rapid SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Detection Self-Tests to Increase COVID-19 Case Detection in Peru: Qualitative Study

Peru reported 974,887 cases of COVID-19 and 80,854 deaths during its first epidemic wave and 1,231,617 cases and 97,951 deaths during its second epidemic wave [4]. The restrictions implemented in Peru, as in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), had devastating impacts on the country’s economy [5]. The restrictions proved unacceptable, especially for those earning a living in nonregulated informal economies [6].

In Peru, cervical cancer is a significant contributor to mortality and morbidity among women of reproductive age. The incidence of cervical cancer in Peru is nearly twice the global rate (23.2 compared with 13.1 per 100,000 women) [15,16]. Evidence-based strategies such as early screening and preventative treatment can reduce morbidity and mortality from the disease [17].
