MAGPI was found to be the most widely used surveillance tool among respondents (n=127, 79.9%), followed by DHIS2 (n=108, 67.9%), and SORMAS (n=25, 15.7%; Table 3). The lower user adoption of SORMAS is not surprising because unlike MAGPI and DHIS2 that have been established as national-scale tools in 2013, SORMAS was introduced through a pilot in 2021 in 2 regions (urban areas of Abidjan and 2 sites in rural Gbêkê).

Various discussions were conducted to uncover the strengths and gaps of DHIS2 implementation; identify specific limitations that hinder the capability and implementation of the road map of DHIS2; analyze how DHIS2 is implemented; explore various ways of future improvements on DHIS2 including alternative concepts, tools, and technologies; and scrutinize various governance documents, tools, system documentation, manuals, and other resources to assess the maturity road map of DHIS2.

Similar to REDCap, the DHIS2 platform has a mobile application (DHIS Tracker), enabling its use in case of weak and fluctuating Internet connectivity. The DHIS2 Tracker allows for auto-syncing of data with the central server once stable Internet connectivity returns. The data elements shared between DHIS2 and REDCap include COVID-19 test results and demographic information of those who were tested including their names, gender, ages, locations, and related underlying medical conditions.

Thus, it is paramount to assess the perception and competencies of DHMs regarding the use of the DHIS2 and its data in accomplishing their core functions.
We defined the use of DHIS2 to include the entire process from data entry, navigation through the DHIS2 application, data validation, data analysis, and production of visualizations.

In Botswana, an e Health system—the District Health Information System version 2 (DHIS2)—has been identified to improve malaria surveillance across the 27 health districts. The decision to consider DHIS2 was based on its documented benefits [13-15]. In spite of the availability of the DHIS2 platform for case-based surveillance of malaria, paper-based case notification forms continue to be utilized.

Primary quantitative outcomes and data availability from the District Health Information System 2 (DHIS2), the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), and other national-level databases.
a SDG: Sustainable Development Goal.
The main quantitative component of the study will be a retrospective observational longitudinal study using routine health data extracted from DHIS2 and other national-level databases.
