Access to MTurk workers is available to anyone with an Amazon Web Services account for the cost of the incentives paid to workers and a fee to Amazon. Requesters (researchers) must develop and format the survey in some generally accessible program (we used Select Survey [Class Apps, Inc]) and post it (much like a job advertisement) on the MTurk site available to workers looking for HITs, and they are responsible for releasing and monitoring the survey, as well as for data download, cleaning, and weighting.

Conducting surveys on platforms such as Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) have proliferated as a cost-effective and fast way of collecting data about health [1-3]. The number of studies using MTurk for social science research has been steadily increasing due in part to the ease of use, existing tools to support research activities, and quick turnaround for data collection [4].

Amazon is the world’s largest e-commerce website. Each day, tens of thousands of products are sold on the platform to Amazon’s 300+ million users [18]. Amazon assists its users to sell, advertise, or purchase products in an efficient and convenient process with few barriers [19]. As of October 2023, a search for “cancer” on Amazon (Amazon.com) returns over 100,000 search results [20].

In this context, the Brazilian Amazon was one of the most affected regions in the country due to its remote location and lack of specialized health assistance [5,7]. Recent studies revealed that approximately 70% of the northern population experience food insecurity [8]. Additionally, 20% experience severe food insecurity, wherein individuals feel hungry but do not have funds to buy food, have only 1 meal a day, or endure entire days without any meals [8].

Identifying Targets for Innovation in Amazon Reviews of Bedwetting Alarms: Thematic Analysis
Using the search term “bedwetting alarms for kids,” Amazon reviews from 2016 to 2022 were extracted from the Amazon marketplace [11] for all bedwetting products that had over 300 ratings in February and March 2022. Data was collected manually by 4 evaluators. Reviews were extracted if they met three criteria: (1) the review was posted within the target date range; (2) the review length was >5 words; and (3) Amazon verified that the reviewer had purchased the product.

Telemedicine and AI technologies that use interactive voice response systems, such as Amazon Alexa, have been shown to be able to facilitate patient screening within a hospital environment [9]. In fact, previous research has demonstrated good agreement and high interrater reliability (IRR) between Amazon Alexa and health care providers [10].

On the other hand, some of them, with a very low Human Development Index, can only be accessed by boat in the middle of the Amazon region like the district of Paysandú. For these hard-to-reach small towns, even access to primary care provided by a primary care physician is often scarce. In Society 5.0, where humans are supposed to be the center and technology the servant, geographical barriers should be broken using telemedicine.

However, with the advent of internet information and shopping through internet retailers such as Amazon, patients can now easily access nonprescription remedies for the rashes and neuropathic pain caused by shingles or PHN. Amazon has recently been utilized as a data source in studies to analyze consumer perception and preference for health-related products [11-13].

Out of over 10,000 products on the United States internet retailer Amazon, 184 products met the required criteria. This group of products had a median consumer rating of 4.5 and a median of 409 reviews per product (range 103-10,573; total 183,366).
