A common theme of “easy to use” was inferred from the responses to the question about what was liked most in the app from responses such as, “self-explanatory,” “user friendly,” “quick to navigate,” and “could be used at home.” The responses regarding what was liked least about Vest Aid included “user interface for reporting the symptom and difficulty rating” (n=5), “visual appeal of the user interface” (n=1), “metronome speed” (n=1), and “distance of tablet too far away” (n=1).

Most of the Aroha’s content takes the form of a dialogue using predetermined “quick replies” (eg, “yes/no” or “tell me more”) that branch out the conversation along user-chosen paths. Emojis, GIFs (simple animated images), multimedia clips (eg, audio relaxation tracks) and “web-views” are used to augment text and make it more youth friendly. Users can group their activities as “favorite” and repeat them through a quick menu.

Pt DAs can provide a quick, low-touch tool to help tailor clinical counseling (eg, by identifying gaps in knowledge or mismatches between values and preferences) and to systematically collect patient-reported preferences and outcomes [8]. Notably, Pt DAs are often designed to address patients’ decisional conflict (uncertainty or anxiety that prevents taking action) in order to support behavior change and bridge the gap between thinking about and doing something to improve one’s health [6].
