HIV infection is a risk factor of neurocognitive impairment. Studies showed older people living with HIV had poorer neurocognitive function as compared to HIV-negative individuals [10-12]. Neurocognitive impairment is prevalent and consequential among older people living with HIV [13]. The Central Nervous System HIV Antiretroviral Therapy Effects Research study reported that nearly half of people living with HIV suffered from neurocognitive impairment [13].

Apathy is one of the most common neuropsychiatric symptoms in neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) such as Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, Huntington disease, and vascular dementia and is prevalent in several psychiatric pathologies such as schizophrenia and major depression [1]. It can be defined as a reduction in goal-directed behavior that persists over time causing impairment in global functioning.

Neurocognitive impairment in HIV, known as HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) when HIV is determined to be the etiology, typically causes impairments in mental processing speed, learning, memory, attention and concentration, executive functions, and motor speed [6,9,10]. It ranges in severity from asymptomatic and mild forms to a severe dementia-type form [11].
