However, rates of engagement in risky sexual behaviors may differ by religion and geographical region of origin. This study investigated the associations of religion and geographical region of origin with the sexual behaviors of international immigrants living in China. Findings from this study can generate evidence to assist the promotion of sexual health and implement programs for target populations at high risk of sexual behaviors.

Some have conceptualized religion as a form of culture [1], and previous research has examined how religious expressions differ by culture [2]. Religion can serve as a primary social identity [3] that intersects with other salient features of identity, such as one’s racial or ethnic identity [4]. Put simply, one’s religious experience and expression notably intersect with one’s cultural identity and context.

In addition, religion is a major component of people’s lives [34]. The concepts of religion and religious duties differ significantly from those in the Western context. A large portion of the population finds happiness through practicing religious duties, as religion offers their lives a sense of value and purpose. Religious identity dictates an individual’s social group and lifestyle choices [35].

This enabled content review and functionality testing of a religion-specific search function embedded in the website, which allowed users to select a religion and denomination (if applicable) from a predetermined drop-down list and view content pertinent to that religion.
