For example, exposure therapy is a gold standard treatment for phobias and other anxiety-related mental health disorders that is efficient and produces durable effects [30,31]. By exposing an individual to fear-related stimuli (eg, a dog) in a controlled setting (eg, the therapist’s office), anxiety reduces, and the fear response diminishes over prolonged and repeated exposure (eg, the individual is no longer fearful around dogs).

About 1 in 5 American adults experience an anxiety disorder, such as social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, or generalized anxiety disorder, making it the most common mental health condition in the United States [1]. Anxiety disorders cause a significant personal and public health burden, often leading to various degrees of disability, increased risk for comorbidities (eg, cardiovascular diseases), and premature mortality [2-4].
