Heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), oxygen saturation (Sp O2), and respiratory rate (RR) are the 4 cardinal vital signs. The measurement of these vital signs is the starting point of physical assessment for both health and wellness. The traditional measurement of these vital signs through physical examination can be challenging, and the recent pandemic has accelerated trends toward telehealth and remote monitoring.

Predicting Hypoxia Using Machine Learning: Systematic Review
It describes the decreased availability of oxygen in specific body regions (tissue hypoxia) or in the body as a whole (general hypoxia) [1-3]. To prevent general hypoxia and to detect deterioration quickly, hypoxemia monitoring is commonly performed using pulse oximetry as a continuous and noninvasive assessment, especially in the intensive care unit (ICU) and operating room (OR) [4]. Hypoxemia is defined as an abnormally low level of blood oxygen.

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) treatment is used worldwide as an adjunctive treatment in NSTI as a means of reducing tissue loss and death [10-13]. Treatment with HBO2 leads to hyperoxia. Besides improving oxygen supply to hypoxic and ischemic tissues, it has been suggested that HBO2 treatment promotes beneficial immunomodulatory activities and antibacterial actions [14-17], resulting in improved survival [18-20].

The primary endpoint was respiratory insufficiency, which we defined as the need for 15 L/min oxygen, high-flow nasal oxygen therapy, or mechanical ventilation, whichever came first. We did not deem intensive care unit (ICU) admission or death to be a suitable endpoint since a substantial portion of the population had treatment restrictions preventing them from receiving cardiac resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, and/or ICU admission.

Some patients with COVID-19 experience rapid deterioration after 1 week of initial symptom onset, requiring oxygen or care in the intensive care unit (ventilators and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation [ECMO]) for severe pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome–like symptoms [5]. According to a New York City report, the mortality rate of COVID-19 for patients on ventilators is over 75% [6].

Oxygen saturation, defined as the fraction of oxygen-saturated hemoglobin relative to total blood hemoglobin, is measured either through an invasive method by sampling arterial blood to analyze the arterial oxygen saturation (Sa O2) via a co-oximeter or with readings collected noninvasively using a pulse oximeter to measure the peripheral or pulse oxygen saturation (Sp O2) level [10].
