The negative consequences arising from substance misuse underscore the need to identify at-risk adolescents early to deliver timely prevention and treatment interventions. Less than 10% of adolescents in need of substance use treatment receive it [6] in the setting of poor screening uptake and referral for treatment [7]. Many adolescents with substance misuse are not identified early, and barriers in screening adolescents for substance misuse contribute to this.
