Mentalization capacity can be evaluated through both objective assessments, such as the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale (LEAS) [4] and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) [5], as well as subjective self-report measures such as the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index. Disruptions or impairments in mentalization are evident in numerous psychiatric and neurological disorders, from borderline personality disorder and depression to psychosis [6-8].

In other words, those with a relatively high ability to cope with parenting also display better levels of mentalization than those with a relatively lower ability to cope. Interestingly, key findings identified a variety of commonalities between mothers and fathers.
