Menstruation is a physical symptom that occurs in women of reproductive age and can bring pain or cramps during the menstrual period (hereafter dysmenorrhea) and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which includes symptoms experienced before the menstrual period. Menstruation significantly impacts women's daily lives when their academic and social activities are most active [1-5], with 85.4% experiencing dysmenorrhea, and 38.4% reporting reduced activity due to menstrual pain [6].

Although there is a plethora of apps related to menstruation [13,14], only a fraction of these apps contains pain-related content, and the accuracy and quality of this content are low [15,16]. Importantly, few of the available menstrual pain apps are designed specifically for adolescents [16] who may have different menstrual knowledge [3], menstrual cycle characteristics [17], and app use preferences than adults.

Furthermore, most focus on tracking menstruation by the user manually entering data into the app and self-checking temperature [1,2]. There may be disadvantages to this method, including reporting errors, the need to recall dates concerning menstruation, and cycle irregularity, which may affect the accuracy of predicting the next cycle dates [3,4].

Digital Global Recruitment for Women’s Health Research: Cross-sectional Study
Recruitment via mobile menstrual tracking apps presents unique opportunities to advance epidemiological research on menstruation [5,6].
Researchers are beginning to take advantage of health apps and online platforms, including blogs, for recruitment of study participants [7]. In particular, the use of boosted Facebook posts for recruitment to health research is increasing in popularity, and recent studies have examined their use to recruit for clinical trials [8,9] and hard-to-reach populations [10].

After the initial test, the participant continued doing the LH test daily until a positive result, which was shown as a stable smiling face symbol on the device, or until the next menstruation. A positive result indicates an LH surge, which typically occurs 1 day before ovulation [13]. Participants reported the LH test results in the dedicated field of their Ava app. The day following the LH surge was defined as the day of ovulation.
