However, very limited evidence supports the use of CGM in ICU settings, especially among frail patients with COVID-19. We thus performed an exploratory, prospective, open-label, parallel, single-center, randomized controlled trial (RCT) to investigate the effectiveness of CGM on short-term, in-hospital mortality among frail and critically ill patients with COVID-19.
This is an exploratory, prospective, open-label, parallel, single-center RCT.

Many of those recruited were higher functioning and better resourced than frail older adults (our ultimate target users). Before this feasibility study, however, our participatory design process included less resourced, physically limited, less technology savvy, and predominantly minority older adults.

Figure 1 shows the AUCFI and AUCFT+FI across the distribution of frailty ranges, from prefrail (FI: 0.1-0.2) to frail; an FI of 0.2 is equivalent to an accumulation of 7 deficits among 31 variables, and the ΔAUC is also displayed. For all veterans across all FI thresholds, the AUC improved by at least 4.1% when adding the FT to the FI. The highest ΔAUC (24%) was observed for FIs of 0.13 to 0.16, and it decreased to ≤10% for FIs of ≥0.2.

Approaches for enhanced nutrition include nutrient supplements, which have shown mixed yet positive effects on physical function in frail individuals [3]. Recent dietary guidelines advocate for a comprehensive healthy diet rather than focusing on individual foods and nutrients to foster sustained health behavior changes [4].

Therefore, the involvement of older people who are frail or impaired (ie, experiencing physical or mental impairments such as dementia, aphasia, motor dysfunction, ataxia, hearing, or visual loss) in the development of technology is not only necessary in maximizing uptake but also in realizing the intent of technology to mitigate frailty and enable older people to manage challenges of everyday life despite impairments.

This cross-sectional assessment required 1 visit to the study site during which participants completed the informed consent, a self-report questionnaire, the Fatigue, Resistance, Ambulation, Illnesses, and Loss of weight (FRAIL) scale, and Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International (short FES-I), followed by the assessment of grip strength and STS performance.

Frailty status was measured on a scale from prefrail to frail, using the Fried Frailty Phenotype (FFP) scale, which assesses five components of frailty, namely handgrip strength, walking speed, physical activity level, exhaustion, and weight loss with an FFP score of ≥1 [28].

In 2012, the organization consisted of a communication center that managed the home care of frail patients referred to home care and responded to their alarms. The center did not offer interaction regarding clinical conditions or home monitoring. All medical issues were referred to the patients’ GPs, emergency services, or hospital services.
