In essence, all central venous catheter patients manifesting signs and symptoms of infection should have blood cultures obtained, or, if present, a swab culture of any purulent exit site drainage, and an evaluation should be performed to exclude an alternate source of infection to explain a patient’s symptomatology. If the catheter must be removed (eg, due to hemodynamic instability), the catheter tip should be sent for culture.
