From these rationales, we developed a pedometer app that simply measures walking intensity by step cadence and time and provides financial incentives based on these measurements (we defined achievement of MPA based on cadence as at least 100 steps per minute). The concept of the novel app was to be a tool to increase MVPA more efficiently than conventional pedometers and to be more scalable to the masses. Our ultimate goal is to investigate the therapeutic effects of the app on lifestyle-related diseases.

These cadence bands have been previously associated with the following behavioral descriptors: incidental movement (1-19 steps/min), sporadic movement (20-39 steps/min), purposeful movement (40-59 steps/min), slow walking (60-79 steps/min), medium walking (80-99 steps/min), brisk walking (100-119 steps/min), and faster walking (≥120 steps/min). Time spent in each one of these bands, as well as time at zero cadence (TZC), were computed.

Serrano et al [12] observed that 40% VO2reserve (mean 3.3 METs, SD 0.8) was associated with approximately 115 spm and that body weight and self-selected walking cadence best predicted (R2=0.34) the cadence required to reach relative MPA.
