In this territory-wide retrospective cohort study, we measured the impact of hospital avoidance among ED patients on excess mortality using ED patient data from 2016 to 2021, a period during which Hong Kong experienced a unique COVID-19 pandemic with 4 distinct waves.

Furthermore, the avoidance of news can have direct consequences for individuals and the society at large. In the current infodemic, news avoidance may be a consequence of news overload (ie, unintentional avoidance). During the current pandemic, relevant advice from intergovernmental, national, and regional authorities has been constantly changing, putting a large strain on individuals who want to keep themselves updated on the current recommendations for hygienic behavior and social distancing.

Parental accommodation refers to changes in caregiver behaviors that facilitate or maintain their child’s anxiety-driven avoidance behaviors [14,15]. Examples of such behaviors include modifying family routines (ie, staying home from work to mitigate a child’s separation fears) or directly participating in a child’s avoidance strategies (ie, keeping a child home from school).
