Clinician Perspectives on Incorporating Physical Activity and Sleep Prescriptions Using eHealth for Youth With Comorbid Psychiatric Disorders: Qualitative Focus Group Study

Clinician Perspectives on Incorporating Physical Activity and Sleep Prescriptions Using eHealth for Youth With Comorbid Psychiatric Disorders: Qualitative Focus Group Study

Physical activity interventions, in conjunction with traditional mental health treatment (ie, psychotherapy), have been shown to improve symptoms related to psychiatric conditions such as autism spectrum disorder [15], depression [16], anxiety [17], and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [18]. Improvements in sleep similarly benefit a wide range of cognitive, affective, and behavioral outcomes in youth with psychiatric disorders [19].

A Dual In-Person and Remote Assessment Approach to Developing Digital End Points Relevant to Autism and Co-Occurring Conditions: Protocol for a Multisite Observational Study

Across studies consulting the autism community, major research priorities include enabling activities of daily living and enhancing quality of life by treating co-occurring conditions and alleviating difficulties associated with core characteristics (eg, providing training for social, vocational, and life skills and by making environments more autism friendly) [4].

The Art of the Special Interest: Lexicon-Based Analysis of Longitudinal Changes in Language Patterns Among Neurodiverse Youth Designing Special Interest–Related Digital Art

A convenience sample of neurodiverse youth whose traits were consistent with level 1 (requiring support) or 2 (requiring substantial support) autism diagnoses [10] participated in five weekly 75-minute Zoom (Zoom Communications) sessions [11].

Stepped Transition to Employment and Postsecondary Education Success (STEPS) for Adolescents and Adults with Autism: Community Implementation Pilot Trial

Stepped Transition to Employment and Postsecondary Education Success (STEPS) for Adolescents and Adults with Autism: Community Implementation Pilot Trial

Autism incurs an estimated lifetime per capita societal cost of US $3.2 million, and data suggest that lost productivity and adult care needs are the largest contributors [1]. As of 2020, adults with autism accounted for 35% of the overall autism service use sector; based on changes in rates of diagnosis during childhood, models project that adults with autism will constitute 71% of the cost of care by the year 2060 [2].

A Gamified mHealth App to Promote Physical Activity and Reduce Sedentary Behavior in Autistic Adults: Protocol for a Remotely Delivered Pilot Intervention Study

A Gamified mHealth App to Promote Physical Activity and Reduce Sedentary Behavior in Autistic Adults: Protocol for a Remotely Delivered Pilot Intervention Study

The research team established a multisource recruitment model that leverages national and regional autism advocacy organizations (eg, Autism Speaks, Autism Delaware), Simons Foundation Powering Autism Research for Knowledge (SPARK) research match services, Research Match.org, and online autism support groups on social media (eg, Reddit and Facebook).

Converging Representations of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism on Social Media: Linguistic and Topic Analysis of Trends in Reddit Data

Converging Representations of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism on Social Media: Linguistic and Topic Analysis of Trends in Reddit Data

The relationship between autism and ADHD has also changed in recent decades. Evidence of high comorbidity [5] and symptom overlap [6] led to DSM-5 allowing ADHD and autism to be diagnosed together [7], whereas ADHD had been an exclusion criterion for autism in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) [8]. Since this diagnostic change, a growing body of literature has focused on understanding clinically converging presentations of ADHD and autism [9].

Improving Accessibility for Work Opportunities for Adults With Autism in an End-to-End Supported Workplace Program: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Cohort Study

Improving Accessibility for Work Opportunities for Adults With Autism in an End-to-End Supported Workplace Program: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Cohort Study

Adults with autism have a strong desire and need for employment that matches their strengths, skills, and interests [1-3]. Yet, adults with autism are far less likely to be employed than their neurotypical counterparts [4-6], with global estimates of unemployment rates for adults with autism ranging up to 80% [7]. In Australia, the estimated rate of workplace participation for adults with autism is 42%, compared to 53% for individuals with other disabilities and 83% for those without a disability [8].

Impact of a Sensorimotor Integration and Hyperstimulation Program on Global Motor Skills in Moroccan Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Exploratory Clinical Quasi-Experimental Study

Impact of a Sensorimotor Integration and Hyperstimulation Program on Global Motor Skills in Moroccan Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Exploratory Clinical Quasi-Experimental Study

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) constitute a subset of developmental disorders distinguished by disturbances in communication, changes in social interactions, and repetitive and stereotyped behaviors [1,2]. These symptoms typically emerge before the age of 3 years and result in functional impairments impacting various aspects of daily life [3,4].

Using the Community Resilience Model and Project ECHO to Build Resiliency in Direct Support Professionals: Protocol for a Longitudinal Survey

Using the Community Resilience Model and Project ECHO to Build Resiliency in Direct Support Professionals: Protocol for a Longitudinal Survey

Intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder (ID/A) are lifelong, complex neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by social, cognitive, and adaptive skill deficits [1,2]. These skill deficits vary in levels of severity for each individual with ID/A and may require supportive care [2].

Effects of a Session of Exergames and Traditional Games on Inhibitory Control in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Randomized Controlled Crossover Trial

Effects of a Session of Exergames and Traditional Games on Inhibitory Control in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Randomized Controlled Crossover Trial

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by significant challenges in reciprocal social communication and interactions, as well as restricted and repetitive behavioral patterns [1,2]. These challenges are closely associated with pronounced impairments in executive functions, particularly inhibitory control, which is linked to deficits in social communication [3] and repetitive behaviors [4].
