Telemedicine Use During the COVID-19 Pandemic in 8 Countries From the International Sexual Health and Reproductive Health Consortium: Web-Based Cross-Sectional Survey Study

It was also used as a means of accessing abortion-related services during the pandemic [8]. Country-specific studies demonstrate that telemedicine was successfully implemented to provide SRH services during the pandemic, and it was a convenient and comfortable approach, especially for young people [9,10]. Telemedicine helped fill several health care service gaps that emerged during the pandemic, especially in the context of SRH [11].

With the internet increasingly becoming a major source of information on abortion [11], an open-access web platform could not only help in disseminating evidence-based abortion resources to all health care professionals but also help in dispelling the myths and misconceptions that often fuel abortion-related stigmas. Furthermore, an open-access web platform could assist in countering abortion-related misinformation or disinformation that is often targeted at health professionals by antichoice groups.

Since June 2022, the legality and accessibility of abortion have changed rapidly and significantly across the country. As of August 2024, a total of 14 states have outlawed abortion with few exceptions, 4 states have enacted 6-week abortion bans [3], and 14 states have adopted or are working to adopt amendments to enshrine the right to abortion in their constitutions [4,5].

Beyond context-specific or cultural considerations that may predict complex abortion views, personal accounts, narratives, and discussions about abortion may similarly reveal the extent to which abortion views depart from a support or opposition dichotomy, including extreme abortion circumstances or personal experience with an abortion. Evidence suggests that these considerations are not ethnocentric but shared globally.
