Patient Experience and Satisfaction in Online Reviews of Obstetric Care: Observational Study

Patient Experience and Satisfaction in Online Reviews of Obstetric Care: Observational Study

Yelp is a website where users share information about their experiences at local businesses by giving a star rating from 1-5 and leaving a narrative review. Yelp is the most used free website in the United States for hospital ratings [6]. In one study, 65% of gynecologists reported being likely to use online ratings to improve patient care, more so than physicians from other specialties [7].

“But His Yelp Reviews Are Awful!”: Analysis of General Surgeons’ Yelp Reviews

We investigated the Yelp reviews of general surgeons in a defined region to categorize the content of the negative reviews and determine whether the number of reviews and the number of negative reviews correlated with the characteristics of the physicians.

Online Reviews as Health Data: Examining the Association Between Availability of Health Care Services and Patient Star Ratings Exemplified by the Yelp Academic Dataset

This study chose Yelp over other online review websites because Yelp offers a free limited dataset for research purposes and Yelp is known to have deployed an industrial-scale fake review filter since 2005 [22,23]. Examinations of Yelp’s filter by previous studies suggest that Yelp’s filter is not perfect, but is reasonably effective at detecting fake or fraudulent reviews [23,24].
