This study involved a secondary analysis of anonymized data collected via Withings activity trackers. The dataset was fully anonymized at the source, and no identifiable information was accessible to the research team. The study received approval from the internal ethics committee of Institut Curie (approval number DATA210201). During registration for the Withings Health Mate app, all users give consent to the anonymous use of their data for research purposes.

At a second home visit, the participants were equipped with the wearable Withings Steel HR smartwatch (Withings Inc), tracking the number of steps and heart rate on a per-minute basis. Participants were also equipped with the nearable Withings Aura sleep mattress (Withings Inc), tracking the various phases of sleep (sleep onset latency, wake, light sleep, deep sleep, rapid eye movement [REM] sleep, and waking up times) on a per-minute basis [34].

The population was initially composed of a sample of 35,841 highly connected Withings customers, those who had purchased at least three Withings-connected devices: a pulse activity tracker [23,24], a body weighing scale [25], and a BP-800 blood pressure monitor [26] (Withings SA). Customer data, including sex, age, number of steps per day, body weight, heart rate, and blood pressure, were provided by Withings and were collected between October 2009 and April 2016.

An International Study on the Determinants of Poor Sleep Amongst 15,000 Users of Connected Devices
Therefore, based on data from an international sample of sleep information from more than 15,000 customers of the consumer electronics company Withings (now Nokia), we have evaluated several determinants of poor total and deep sleep quantity and determined a ratio of deep/total sleep duration that indicates poor sleep.
