Ecological Momentary Assessment in Behavioral Research: Addressing Technological and Human Participant Challenges

Our EMA monitoring protocol was adapted from earlier studies conducted by Shiffman and colleagues [38,42]. Participants were instructed that they would be monitored for the duration of the 12-month study and that the frequency of prompts they received on their smartphones would vary over time. At random times throughout the waking hours of the day, the smartphone prompted the participants with an alarm tone to answer the EMA survey questions.
