Illicit Trade of Prescription Medications Through X (Formerly Twitter) in Japan: Cross-Sectional Study

To understand what kinds of medications are prevalent on the SNS-based black market, we systematically counted and categorized the names of medications that were identified in 237 posts included in the buying (n=67) and selling (n=170) categories (Figure 1). The categorization was assigned in accordance with the ATC classification. Of these 237 posts, 185 (78.1%) contained at least 1 specific medication name, and 1041 distinct medication names were mentioned (Table S2 in Multimedia Appendix 2).

Meanwhile, recent studies have found that 29% of university students have SNS addiction and that SNS addiction is associated with anxiety, depression, and mania symptoms, similar to prior studies that investigated excessive SNS use [25,26]. Although recent studies have identified associations between excessive SNS use, SNS addiction, and mental health status, it remains unknown whether there is a clear pathway from excessive SNS use to SNS addiction, thus influencing users’ mental health (ie, pathway).

However, a woman whose comments made up a disproportionate number of total SNS conversations (94/353, 26.6%) was excluded because her contributions may have distorted the study results. Ultimately, all 259 text messages written in Korean from the SNS groups of 24 KC middle-aged women were used in the final analysis of this study. Text analysis was conducted on 259 messages sent among the 24 participants via SNS over the 12 weeks by types of social support.

Furthermore, it is important to note that, while Facebook is the most popular SNS in Australia, the use of other SNSs such as Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat is on the rise [25]. Of note, SNSs that use imaging and visual components such as Snapchat and Instagram are particularly popular among younger Australians aged less than 30 years. Therefore, it will be interesting in the future for studies to assess the effectiveness of recruiting younger participants through other SNSs.
