Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is a treatment modality where a registered dietitian (RD) meets one-on-one with a patient to provide individualized lifestyle recommendations. MNT can be used to address a wide range of health conditions and may occur in various practice settings, such as outpatient and inpatient facilities. Following an initial intake, an RD meets with a patient regularly to individualize their treatment plan and help patients achieve their health goals.

Hu et al [7] found that Foodsmart members with obesity have been able to achieve sustained weight loss over the time during which they have used the platform.
Previous studies have also shown the effectiveness of digital nutrition interventions in helping participants lower their blood pressure. Milani et al [8] provided a digital intervention that consisted of lifestyle recommendations as well as medication management to assist patients in reducing their blood pressure.

A healthy diet is a critical component in this treatment plan; this includes a meal plan of healthy carbohydrates and fats as well as fiber-rich foods, while limiting foods that are high in trans fats, sodium, and added sugars [8]. Generally, healthy diets for those with diabetes or hyperglycemia are nutrient rich and low in fat and calories.

There is a need for additional evidence on how digital technologies that alter behavioral economics, such as food purchasing, might play a role in improving diet and driving more cost-effective health outcomes for individuals with obesity.
Our goal was to conduct an observational longitudinal study leveraging existing data from a digital nutrition platform to investigate the effectiveness of a personalized nutrition, meal planning, and food purchasing program on weight loss among individuals with obesity.
