Many individuals with IC/BPS present heterogeneous syndromes from several causes [4] suggesting it should be classified into different subtypes [5]. Recent investigations of genetics and biomarkers have begun to uncover the molecular mechanisms of IC/BPS [4,6]. First-degree relatives of women with IC/BPS have a greater prevalence of the disease than women without affected relatives, indicating a genetic component [7,8].
