A solution architect needs to update a form, a context-dependent collection of discrete data entry fields. However, multiple other solutions may populate or use these data fields, including results or data review solutions, “smart” documentation or ordering templates, outbound interfaces, logical rules or alerts, or patient registries. Without querying the database or system configurations for each potential impact, the architect is largely unaware of possible downstream ramifications.

We conducted a prospective cohort trial of patients over the age of 18 years presenting to the ED for care to understand the effect of our digital whiteboard on patient satisfaction. Our study site was a single urban, academic, and tertiary care hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, with an annual visit volume of approximately 63,000 patients. We enrolled participants on a convenience basis after triage into private rooms in the ED with a digital whiteboard.

Electronic Paper Displays in Hospital Operations: Proposal for Deployment and Implementation
(D) Visitor signage. Images provided by E Ink.
Dry-erase boards have been used in the hospital to orient patients to the date, provide information regarding their care team members, and even communicate pain scores [14-16]. In addition, paper and laminated signs have been used outside of patient rooms to convey information regarding isolation status, fall risk, and need for personal protective equipment [4].
