Digital Instruments for Reporting of Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Clinical Trials: Comparison of End-of-Day Diaries Versus the Experience Sampling Method

Linear mixed models were performed using the lme4 function in R Statistical Software (version 3.6.3, February 29, 2020) [15]. In each model (per study), adherence to the app constituted the dependent variable and time constituted the within-subject independent variable. A restricted maximum likelihood estimation method and first-order autoregressive variance-covariance matrix for the within-subject variable time fitted the data best on the basis of the lowest value of the Akaike information criterion.
