This study protocol was reviewed and approved by the institutional review boards of the Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría (National Institute of Psychiatry) Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz in Mexico (approval CEI/C/015/2020) and Harvard Medical School in the United States (approval 20-1494). Web-based informed consent was obtained from participants. The data were deidentified, and participants received a gift card equivalent to approximately US $20 for each follow-up SAQ.

Alcohol consumption risk was assessed using the US Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test–Consumption Scale (USAUDIT-C) [23]. The USAUDIT-C is a 3-item self-report scale adapted from the consumption questions in the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) [24].

The US Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption Scale (USAUDIT-C) is a 3-item self-report scale adapted from the consumption questions in the widely used Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Compared with the AUDIT, the USAUDIT-C includes expanded response options for the first 3 AUDIT questions—from 5 to 7 categories—to allow for more precise measurements in accounting for differences in standard drink sizes and cut-off limits [29].
