A series of computer vision modules detected the plate and automatically segmented and recognized different food items into 9 broad food classes (pasta, potatoes, meat, breaded items, rice, green salad or vegetables, mashed potatoes, carrots, and beans) while their 3 D shape was reconstructed. The carbohydrate content of foods was then calculated by combining the volume of each food item with the nutritional information provided by a nutrition database.
