Upper and lower thresholds were defined by the outer limits of the EWS criteria, that is, HR ≤40 or ≥130 bpm, RR ≤8 or ≥30 brpm, Sp O2 ≤91%, and AT ≤34.9 °C or ≥38.5 °C. Single-parameter alarms were simulated for 1-hour time windows, and situations where multiple single-parameter alarms were present in the same window were counted as 1 alarm.
All the simulated alarms were classified based on the timing of the alarms, as illustrated in Figure 1.
