Rethinking the Difficult Patient: Formative Qualitative Study Using Participatory Theater to Improve Physician-Patient Communication in Rheumatology

The research team collaborated with the members of the organization to develop a script for the initial scenario that depicted a physician-patient conflict and reflected a typical experience of living with SLE (eg, patients who were feeling that they were not being heard and physician were ignoring patient concerns). The actors playing the physician and patient had expertise in improvisation, which allowed for dynamic interaction with audience members.
