Participants attending one of the 50 clinics allocated to the intervention group received targeted BCC messages on their registered mobile phones at programmed intervals during the 14-day period in which the e-voucher was active. Messages contained health promotion and sensitization information on the importance of malaria prevention and LLIN use during pregnancy, in addition to reminders to redeem the e-voucher for an LLIN at a registered retailer (Textbox 1).

In England and Wales, there are approximately 278,000 care home residents aged ≥65 years (approximately three-quarters of whom are aged ≥80 years), approximately half of whom live in homes with nursing and half of whom live in homes without nursing and over two-thirds of whom experience substantial limitations in their ability to carry out day-to-day activities [3].

Due to some variability around this timing in the actual data collected (ie, some missing data points and some data collected over shorter intervals), data were aggregated to reflect the average battery percentage per hour of each study day per participant. This resulted in a comparable number of data points per day across participants.

During this pre-CM phase, participants were instructed to drink as they normally would, except for at least 1 day of required abstinence (for persons who drink every day). Participants were given instructions about the monitor, including not submerging the device in water, avoiding using alcohol-based items, and not wearing socks under the monitor.

They reported a wide range of different caring responsibilities, with more than half (39/64, 61%) caring for someone who did not receive professional care; the mean time they reported as spent in caring was 6 days per week and 10 hours per day. In total, 33 (52%) of the 64 group-2 participants completed the follow-up survey.
