Community advisory boards (CABs) are a widely integrated methodology in participatory health research to understand community needs, advise research, and ultimately improve health behaviors or health outcomes [1]. Comprising community members, leaders, stakeholders, and others, CABs are united by a common health interest, identity, status, or experience [2].

Despite the presumed barriers to enrolling older adults in digital, remote clinical research, several trials conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic have succeeded in this pursuit, including a longitudinal brain aging study [20], a telemedicine initiative in a primary care setting [21], telehealth delivery of music therapy services [22], and a digital group intervention addressing worry and social isolation [23].

A recent randomized controlled trial tested the effectiveness of a fasting-mimicking diet (low calorie, low protein, plant-based diet) in improving biological age. After 3 cycles, a cycle being a consecutive 5-day period in a month, biological age was reduced by a median of 2.5 years [19].

Using the app, informal and formal carers can easily conduct the digital photo activity with residents by accessing a database of artistic, black-and-white, generic photos and making a person-centered selection of digital photos to view with the residents [13], as opposed to having a limited collection of printed photos.

The VR system was developed using the HP Reverb G2 Omnicept Edition headset, which includes a variety of biometric sensors such as eye tracking, a facial camera (lower), a heart rate sensor, and sensors for brain activity while maintaining the core features of the standard version. These features include a resolution of 2160 × 2160 px per eye, a 114° field of view, a 90 Hz refresh rate, and integrated audio.

The creation of a trauma-informed codevelopment space was crucial to facilitate safer and more open discussions. To accomplish this, we established a parallel, intervention refinement process using a helical structure developed by this team and based on our prior research with structural indicators for community-based participatory action research [33]. As shown in Figure 2, the “hand off” of work drives an iterative (helical) thinking process.

Our primary objective is to identify patient needs, behaviors, and preferences to inform the development of a user-friendly and effective personalized automated smartphone telemonitored app that supports recovery post-TKA.
We conducted a qualitative exploration using a person-based approach [13] to inform the development of a digital health behavior change intervention.

The index visit was defined as the first order of a culprit medication for a given patient on a given hospitalization (encounter), with only one medication used to define each hospitalization for each patient. As such, a given individual patient could be included more than once, although each encounter (hospitalization) was only used once for each patient under a given culprit medication. The earliest date of enrollment was July 6, 2011, and the latest was April 16, 2024.

The International Organization for Standardization describes usability as “the extent to which a system, product or service can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a specified context of use” [1]. Usability testing is a method in which a product is evaluated by users as they perform tasks, and may include formative or summative testing [2].
