Of these 5808 hospitalizations, 794 (13.7%) were excluded from the study analysis because the patient died during the index hospitalization (n=198, 3.4%), the hospitalization originated at a non-KPNC facility (n=504, 8.7%), or follow-up data was incomplete (n=92, 1.6%). The final study population included 5014 hospitalizations. The average age of the study population was 71.9 (SD 13.99) years and 49.4% (2477/5014) of patients were male.

After screening (n=160), 53 applicants were excluded, mainly due to lack of informed consent (n=29; Figure 1). A total of 90 participants were randomized to i CBT-I group (45/90, 50%) or a CG (45/90, 50%). Baseline self-report and clinical interview data were available for all participants. The web-based assessment was completed by 92% (83/90) of the participants at T2 and 84% (76/90) at T3, and the clinical telephone interview by 82% (74/90) of the participants at T2 and 67% (60/90) at T3.

The 3 cluster groups were categorized as “Adherent” (n=33), “Minimal use” (n=17) and “Intermittently adherent” (n=14) according to their visible wear-time patterns (Figure 2). The patients included in the Adherent group had a steady recording of physical activity data, the Minimal use group showed longer periods of no recorded data, and the Intermittently adherent group presented with a notably larger variation in the amount of recorded data (Figure 2).
